Plans to double the number of householders who receive free flood warnings from the Environment Agency have been welcomed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
More homes will be added to the body’s flood warning system from the end of this month, meaning a further half a million properties with a landline at risk of river and sea flooding will be part of the scheme.
“This is good news for homeowners and business and sensible advice,” commented Kelly Ostler Coyle, media officer at the ABI.
Insurers use the flood maps to determine policy prices, so further information will help ensure costs are related to risk.
The floods that hit Cumbria last November have caused £200 million-worth of damage, with some 36,000 claims being made by insurance customers.
Interim payments to help homeowners cope have been made up to £400,000, with nearly 500 people placed in temporary accommodation while their homes are repaired.
