Check your insurance cover for Christmas – protect your home and all those presents!

Britain’s homeowners have been advised to double check their insurance requirements as the Christmas period approaches.

Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto, has spoken about the issue of home insurance over the festive season, after research uncovered discrepancies between the different policies available.

“When it comes round to things like Christmas people may not automatically think that they are buying loads of presents and wonder if they are insured,” he stated.

Mr Powell urged policyholders to double check their existing home insurance to ensure that they have sufficient cover in place.

Recent findings from Defaqto revealed that 90 per cent of home insurance policies increase their cover over Christmas, but the levels by which they do so differ greatly.

The changes typically amount to a specified monetary increase, with Christmas allowances ranging from £1,000 up to £25,000.

Some insurance firms impose a percentage increase in the overall contents limit, with adjustments of between five and 25 per cent not uncommon.

Defaqto found that the duration of this increase can vary, but will typically apply to the 30 days preceding and 30 days following Christmas.
