Get your gardening gloves on and head outside – it’s time to collect some festive foliage and decorate your door…
For your Christmas wreath you will need:
• A wreath frame or a wire coat hanger (the latter is cheaper but less sturdy)
• Florist wire & cutters
• Gardening gloves
• Evergreen vegetation lovingly – and legally – gathered from your garden or local woodland (or buy artificial if you’re a city-dweller)
• Optional extras: small pinecones, ribbons, dried berries, glitter, snow spray, or anything else you want to add
How to make the Christmas wreath:
1. Cut your foliage so that each sprig is no longer than 20cm long.
2. Secure the biggest piece to the wreath frame or coat hanger using florist wire. Be sure to wind the wire tightly around a few times so the wreath is wind-resistant.
3. Work your way around the wreath adding one sprig at a time, making sure there is some overlap with each piece (like fish scales) and also ensuring that the needles/leaves are pointing in the same direction around the circle.
4. Once your foliage is all firmly secured to the frame or coat hanger, it’s time for the fun bit: tie on ribbons, wire on pinecones or glue on small clusters of dried berries to your heart’s content.
5. If you want to go for gold, spray on glitter or fake snow (bearing in mind the product’s weather resistance if it’s for the front door) until you’re sure you’ve well and truly beaten those pesky Joneses.
6. Voila! You now have the perfect Christmas wreath.
