This year’s runners-up are Su Ping Ong and Alson Tan Seng Wai, both final year students at Birmingham City University.

Janine Stone, owner of the eponymous company, spoke of her delight at a “deserved” winner.

She added: “Erica’s winning design captured the brief perfectly and delivered an exciting and vibrant design solution for contemporary living. The panel and I particularly liked the innovative use of light and shade within the design.

“The competition attracted a large number of submissions and we have been extremely impressed by the quality and professionalism of the designs, especially the twelve finalists”.

Undergraduates in their final year at UK universities were asked to design a 450 sq metre lateral apartment, which could be set in any major world city.

Erica Deam went for a contemporary apartment in London with an affinity to nature alongside a sense of solitude and rustic mountain living.

She said that by providing varying layers and elevations she would be able to create functional space with varying levels of privacy.

Vistas and terraces throughout are designed to offer views of the home and a strong visual connection between the interior and exterior.

Deam said: “I am thrilled to have won such a prestigious competition and look forward to working with Janine Stone and her design team. It’s a chance of a lifetime and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with her”.

Last year’s winner, Tony Tan has been offered and accepted a role with Janine Stone following his six month internship at the company.
