Finding a decent interior designer when you don’t live in a major city can be tricky, and even when you’re located in the centre of the action the price of hiring one can prove an insurmountable obstacle. Cue Charlotte Crosland Online, where the price is (relatively) cheap and the process blissfully simple.
Crosland launched the service in the summer. “There were a lot of people who wanted us to do a room for them but couldn’t afford our interior design service,” explains the award-winning designer. “I thought this would be a good way to resolve that – plus it means I can work with people all over the country, not just in the southeast.”
But how on earth can an interior designer provide a service without seeing the room? Here’s how it works. You pay £500 and then complete a design questionnaire, giving details of how you want the room to function and feel, an indication of your style likes and dislikes, and a budget (if you’ve got one). Once you’ve done this, you will receive instructions on how to properly measure the room. Having taken the measurements, you submit them along with eight photos – one shot diagonally from each corner of the room and one of each wall, taken from the centre of the opposite wall.
Cost-wise, while Charlotte Crosland Online is a more affordable option than using an in-home, in-person service, £500 is still a lot of money – so what can you expect for it?
First, the most important thing: your custom scheme board. This is a comprehensive mood board providing specific examples of what colours, paint, wallpaper, flooring, window treatments, fabrics, furniture and lighting to use. Accompanying this are a scheme reference, telling you exactly where you can get each item and how much it costs, and a to-scale floor plan detailing where everything should go.
Despite its relative infancy, the company already has several success stories, including the stylish study makeover below. Having been given a ‘rather dreary’ basement home office to work with, Crosland used a grey, orange and burgundy colour scheme to produce a calm but stylish space. Looking at the before and after pics, it’s clear just how valuable that client’s £500 investment proved to be.
