Why garden buildings can add value to your home

Selling your home is a huge decision and even if you’re a long way off putting your property on the market, you’re probably keen to identify ways to boost its value. One of the best tips is to increase the space available within it.

However, this is not always an option. You may not have room to extend the back or your property could lack a loft or basement to convert. Yet there is another option at your disposal, which is to create additional living space in your garden.

In addition to the traditional shed and greenhouse, there are so many other great garden buildings you can purchase. A summerhouse could provide you with that den you have always wanted for relaxing in, while a log cabin could make a suitable home office.

Read on to find out more about a few of the ways an outdoor building can benefit your household.

A place to work

With remote working becoming an ever-more realistic option and more and more employers allowing their staff members to do their job from home occasionally, it’s never been more worthwhile to have a peaceful place in your house where you can do these tasks. Unfortunately, we don’t all have that spare bedroom to dedicate to being an office full-time.

In addition to that, a house can be a noisy place, and you might find children playing or your partner getting on with household chores distracting. Luckily there is a solution available, and that’s setting up an office in the garden.

You don’t have to use it as somewhere you work on your computer either, as these structures are just as useful for studios. If you have a passion for art, pottery or sculpture, this could be an ideal space in which to set up a workshop where you can enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet while indulging in your pastime.

A place to relax

Of course, it shouldn’t be all about work and no play, as that would make your garden a very dull place indeed. If you have ambitions to invest in an outdoor building, you can just as easily reserve it for relaxing in.

A summerhouse is the perfect place for a den. You can put a comfy sofa in here and spend your evenings with the doors and windows wide open so you can get plenty of fresh air while you relax. It’s also a great spot to set up a home cinema, as you will have plenty of space inside for seating and a large screen that you might not have in a busy living room.

You can also use a cabin or summerhouse as an area to dine during the summer. Perfect either for intimate family meals that are a little different to the norm, or as a fancy place to entertain guests, such a building is ideal if you like dining al fresco. This is because it fits seamlessly into the garden, providing you with shelter and warmth but without sacrificing all that fresh air and the beautiful views.

Whatever you choose to do with your cabin, though, you will have built additional living space. While you may use it as a studio, potential buyers could see it as a good den. Your investment may end up becoming a real selling point to people looking around – and before you decide to put your home on the market you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it yourself.
